Length:           600-700 words (approximately 2+ pages double-spaced)

 

Questions:      How did “new imperialism” – especially but not only that of the new British Empire – function in East Asia and in Africa? What were some similarities between imperialism in the two places? What were some differences? Why, in particular, were there differences? Consider BOTH the “Western” side and the “non-Western” side and consider political, economic, social, and cultural perspectives.

 

Sources for Imperialism in East Asia: You must use the TWO of the following THREE primary documents to discuss the above questions (note that we will discuss these documents in recitation on March 15):
