Questions: How did “new imperialism” – especially but not only that of the new British Empire – function in East Asia and in Africa? What were some similarities between imperialism in the two places? What were some differences? Why, in particular, were there differences? Consider BOTH the “Western” side and the “non-Western” side and consider political, economic, social, and cultural perspectives.
Sources for Imperialism in East Asia: You must use the TWO of the following THREE primary documents to discuss the above questions (note that we will discuss these documents in recitation on March 15):
1. Xu Naiji and Yuan Yulin, “Memorials on the Legalization and Elimination of Opium” (1836)
2. Lin Zexu, “Letter to Queen Victoria” (1839)
3. Fukuzawa Yukichi, “Goodbye Asia” (1885)
Sources for Imperialism in Africa: First, you MUST use Abina and the Important Men to discuss the above question. You must ALSO use ONE of the following TWO primary documents to discuss the above questions (note that we will discuss these documents and Abina in recitation on March 22):
1. David Livingstone’s speech to Cambridge University (1857)
2. Karl Pearson, “Social Darwinism and Imperialism” (1907)
Other Sources: You will also need to use our lectures from the week of March 15-17 and the videos shown (https://nerdfighteria.info/video/116/alJaltUmrGo) and assigned during that week and the following week as background information along with the primary documents and the Abina book mentioned above.
