The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed into legislation in March, 2010. Identify the impact of this legislation on your nursing practice by choosing two key nursing provisions outlined in the American Nurses Association "Key Provisions Related to Nursing" summary. Discuss how these two provisions have impacted, or will impact, your current practice of nursing.

The PPACA purpose is to ensure the all Americans have access to QUALITY, affordable health care and will create a more sustainable health care system in the United States.

The nursing profession stands to gain from this health care reform as far as nursing education and patient education is concerned. There is more of an outpatient focus and a shift from disease centered treatment to a health and wellness prevention focus. All nurses are teachers in a sense. We provide patient education on disease processes, signs and symptoms, and prevention and wellness. So nurses will be hitting their stride with this health care reform.Having a greater need for primary care given by nurses and opening further doors to implement and prevent health and wellness. Another benefit to PPACA will improve nursing education. There is planned increases for funding primary nursing education, grants for continuing education, and achieving advanced degrees to help with the current complexity that the patients are trending currently. With the complexity of the patient’s illnesses it will benefit to have nurses join the forces to keep the patients healthy as prevention instead of having the cost of readmission to treat the exacerbations or complications of complex disease processes.
