Principles of Neuroscience: Role of Channels and Receptors

1.) It has been demonstrated that a rise in presynaptic Ca2+ is necessary and sufficient for neurotransmitter release. What experimental evidence supports the claim that Ca2+ is necessary? Sufficient?

2.) Explain how all ion channels function in the same way.  Explain how they function in different ways.  What properties enable them to function in the same way. What properties enable them to function in different ways?  Describe some experimental approaches that would help you determine these properties.  Contrast the function of ionotropic receptors to that of metabotropic receptors.
