Principles of Neuroscience: Neurotransmitters science homework

1.) You are given a vial of Chemical X.  You are told it is a newly discovered neurotransmitter.  Define the criteria that determine whether a substance is a neurotransmitter. What experimental tests could you do to show that substance X is, indeed, a neurotransmitter and it works at the neuromuscular junction?

2.) How can you experimentally determine whether a synapse is chemically or electrically mediated?  Compare the pros and cons of electrical versus chemical synapses. List the steps involved in chemical neurotransmission.
