The purpose of this assignment is to introduce

Objective

The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to your new digital portfolio site that operates on the WordPress Content Management System (CMS).

Why Create a Digital Portfolio?

The primary reason you are creating a digital portfolio is to help you showcase your work and talents to a future employer. The portfolio site is for you the employee, not you the artist, actor, or athlete. Think of it as something you would give an employer to hire you to work in the Music and Entertainment industries, or in Sports Media and Internet Marketing fields. Additional reasons you should develop a digital portfolio are:

  • To brand yourself online
  • Make a great first impression
  • Demonstrate industry diversity
  • Increase your visibility
  • Add value to your job applications
  • Keep track of and organize your work
  • Future reference

Why Use WordPress?

There are many content management systems available but, to date, none compare to the power, flexibility, and usability of WordPress. WordPress CMS has become the industry standard in web development for businesses of all sizes, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders across all industries. Here are a few more reasons why we are teaching you to use WordPress for your digital portfolio:

  • It’s free.
  • Powerful right out of the box.
  • Flexible.
  • Search engine friendly.
  • Safe and secure.
  • Customizable.
  • Lots of support.
  • Hosts multimedia.
  • Mobile friendly.
  • Integration.
  • Easy to manage.
  • You’re not committed to one hosting provider.
  • Schedule posts.
  • Multi-user capability.
  • Publish content with one-click.
  • Universal platform.

Resources

Lynda.com

Lynda.com offers several step-by-step tutorials to help you get started using WordPress Content Management System for your Digital Portfolio. Here is a course we highly recommend for beginners. While completing this entire course is not required for this assignment, you will likely find several video tutorials very helpful when developing your WordPress site.

Instructions

YOU MUST WATCH THE VIDEO TUTORIAL BELOW BEFORE STARTING THIS ASSIGNMENT.

...Yes, it is that important!

For this assignment, you will need to:

1. Set up your WordPress site.  MY USER AND PSWD IS AT THE BOTTOM

http://fsbizsite.com/richardsonjoseph/wp-login.php

User: BlackbeastthedonPswrd: 80pA(VIj^o4S^gR^7Q

2. Log into your WordPress Portfolio site. Then find, install, and activate a theme based on the following criteria:

  • Layout: Left Sidebar, Right Sidebar
  • Features: Custom Colors, Custom Header, Custom Menu, Theme Options

While there are thousands upon thousands of quality WordPress themes to choose from, you must choose a theme that meets the predetermined criteria above. Your portfolio courses and program courses will require you to have these elements on your WordPress CMS. If you choose a theme that does not have these required elements, you will not be able to complete future assignments.

At this point, I recommend bookmarking your WordPress Admin link for convenient access later on. Using the previous example, the login page link would be: fsbizsite.com/johndoe/wp-admin

3. Create five (5) pages. These five pages should include:

  • Home (occurs by default)
  • About
  • Portfolio
  • Resumé
  • Blog
  • Contact

4. Create the main menu for your primary navigation bar. Without creating and publishing your Main Menu, your pages are not likely to appear on your site.

And that's it! Now you are up and running with your digital portfolio using WordPress.

Deliverable

For this assignment, upload a Word document to the FSO platform that contains a link to your portfolio, a brief description of your personal brand, and the name of the theme you chose to install for your site.
