Hello-
This is the explanation of the project -
What Is the Fiction Project?
Your project is to write a short work of fiction. Even if you don't see yourself as a fiction writer, the fiction project will sharpen your skills for whatever kind of writing you do.
During the next few weeks, you will be working on two tracks.
Track A. As you can see from the following schedule, you will submit a special Fiction Project writing assignment each week.
Track B. At the same time, each week, you will work separately on the rough draft of your short story. You don't turn in your short story rough draft until Week 08.
Each special Fiction Project exercise (Track A) helps you develop and strengthen a different aspect of your rough draft (Track B), until the story is complete. During Week 08, Tracks A and B come together when you submit the rough draft of your complete short story.
Meanwhile, in a sort of third track, you will continue to write in your journal and practice different writing skills in the weekly exercises that will help strengthen your story as you work on it.

Step in the Project |
|
Plot/ Conflict |
Week 03 |
Outline a plot from your journal. Get the plot for your story from your journal entry that describes an experience of conflict, such as between friends. State the thesis or main idea behind the plot. |
|
Character, Dialogue, Cultural Considerations |
Week 04 |
Build character sketches of two of the main characters in action in your story. Include dialogue. |
|
Setting |
Week 05 |
Describe the setting where your story takes place. |
|
Point of View, Style and Voice |
Week 06 |
Choose point of view. Select a scene from your story and write it first from the point of view of Character A, using the "first person." Then write the same scene from the point of view of Character B in the "third person." |
|
 Theme |
Week 07 |
Incorporate theme. Write two possible endings for your story where you incorporate theme. Choose one of the details in your story to act as a symbol. (Example: a broken vase to symbolize a broken friendship. Or a statue of a famous woman medical doctor to symbolize a new independence.) Write Ending A to be too obvious and preachy about the theme. In Ending B, try to imbed the theme and meaning into the action and character - be more subtle! |

JOURNAL ENTRY:Â
When I was a child parents often asked me to walk to the store and pick up groceries. They constantly reminded me to look both ways when crossing the street. One day while crossing the street I was hit by a car, thrown 15 feet and landed on my right leg fracturing my shinbone. Luckily this was nearly 2 blocks from my home when my parents realized something was wrong after hearing sirens and wondering what was taking so long. About 10 minutes had passed when both my parents came running around the corner shocked and surprised to see me on a gurney being loaded into the back of an ambulance.
PLOT:
(Opening scene) in opening scene I’m being asked by both parents to pick up a few groceries from the store that is 2 ½ blocks away.
(Initial incident to introduce conflict) we were running low on groceries in my parents decided to send me to the store. They tell me to be careful and to look both ways when crossing the street.
(Conflict increases) I forgot to look both ways when crossing the street when I was hit by a vehicle making a left-hand turn hitting me on the right side.
(Conflict nears the high point) the car hits me and tosses me to the side of the street where I begin to cry from the pain caused by impact.
(Climax) both parents come running up the street after hearing all the commotion, sirens and wondering how come it was taking so long for me to return.
(Ending or resolution) after this incident occurred I was no longer chosen for grocery runs.

THEME:
Not only is listening to your parents extremely important, equally crucial is listening to what they’re saying and applying it to your general surroundings, in my case it would be crossing the street and being aware of cars turning.

This is the week that I am behind so I would want this down first and as soon as possible-
Â
Below is your Fiction Project assignment that you will turn in to the drop box for Week 04. Be sure to contact your instructor if you get stuck or have questions."

Character, Dialogue, Cultural Considerations |
Week 04 |
Build characters. Write character sketches of two of the main characters in action in your story. Include dialogue. Â |
Â
Step 1. Last week you outlined your plot. From your basic plot, you should be able to identify two characters to write sketches for. In our Little Red Riding Hood simplified example, you would choose the little girl and the wolf.
Step 2. Before you start, study your textbook on "Cultural Considerations"Â and "Characterization."Â
Step 3. In a new document (separate from the rough draft of the story you are working on), write character sketches of two of your characters. Try to include some cultural details.Â
|
Sample of how your character sketches might begin Character sketch #1The little girl. The little girl loves to wear a riding hood that is red. In fact, the neighbors call her Little Red Riding Hood. She is petite with blond hair, a round chin, and a slender nose. She loves to do cartwheels when she is not carrying a basket of cookies. She also loves to visit her Grandmother who was born and raised in Portugal . Character sketch #2.The wolf. The wolf is old and lonely and has no friends. He worries all the time because he is getting so old he can no longer run fast enough to catch the deer and the rabbits in the forest. He is always hungry and looking for new dinners. His ears are long and shabby. |
What to turn in this week: Submit your two character sketches.
Developing Your Rough Draft
To get things going on your short story, begin to write the rough draft as you complete your Fiction Project assignment above. (You won’t turn your rough draft in until Week 08. Plan to work on it a little each day.) Use your plot outline, theme, and the two character sketches (see above) to help you get started. In general, will find that your Fiction Project assignments will help you build and strengthen your story as you go along.
This is what is due this week –
Below is your assignment for this week's step of the Fiction Project.

Fiction Fundamentals |

Step in the Project |
|
Setting |
Week 05 |
Describe the setting where your story takes place. Â |
Step 1. Your first step is done! During Weeks 03 and 04, you completed your plot outline and theme plus your two character sketches. (You are probably inserting a lot of this work into the rough draft of your story.)
Step. 2. Study  the section on "Setting" in your textbook, especially the "Do's for Description" at the end of the section.
Step 3. Describe the setting. Details of setting answer the question: "Where are we?" You probably already know where your story is taking place, but now is the time to develop the detail and mood, the power of the setting. Then you can use it in your story!
|
Sample sentences for a setting The little girl and her mother live next to a large forest. The forest trees and plants grow thickly together, thorn branches pushing into palm leaves, rubber trees scraping bamboo. Large black birds fly from tree to tree, cawing. Only one trail cuts through the forest, letting in a little bit of sun. And so on. |
What to turn in this week: Submit a description of your short story’s setting.
Developing Your Rough Draft
Keep working on the rough draft of your story. Feel free to incorporate any details of setting from this week's exercise. Remember, your Rough Draft is not due until Week 08.
So there it is I would be paying each week something is due and I am a good tipper!!! This week I have enclosed two assignments and I need them by Sunday February 5 by 10pm I realize this is short notice that is why I have placed the bid high because I do appreciate it!
Thanks
Pamela
