Understanding the stylistic similarities and differences of Tin Pan Alley songs and emo. A secondary goal is to apply important terms such as "timbre" and "groove."
Whiting and Donaldson's Tin Pan Alley song My Blue Heaven (1927) and Taking Back Sunday's emo song My Blue Heaven (2007) share a title, but do they share more?
Step 1: Listen to both songs. Examine the lyrics to Whiting and Donaldson's My Blue Heaven and Taking Back Sunday's My Blue Heaven.
Step 2: Note any significant musical features used in either song. Describe the groove of both songs. Describe the timbre of the singer's voice in both songs and note any other unusual timbres you hear.
Step 3: Summarize the content of the lyrics for these two songs in one sentence each.
Step: Answer the following questions: Are there common themes to both songs? How are these themes dealt with? What are the most important differences between these songs? Summarize these answers in one paragraph, and cite specific lyrics or musical observations to support your position.
For further study: Research the stylistic characteristics of emo. To what extent do the differences in theses songs epitomize the stylistic distinctions between Tin Pan Alley songs and emo songs?
