Biography of an Object

There are two parts to this assignment. The first part entails you answering some questions that will guide you and help you think critically about the subject matter. The second part of the assignment asks you to write a short essay -- a biography of the object -- from the perspective of the object. In preparing the second component, your goal is to create an outlet by which we can have more awareness of the origins and global stories of the goods we use today.

Types of Objects to Pick: You should pick a particular good from a brand. You should pick a singular and particular object (not I-phone for instance but a particular I-phone 6 or other model). If you own the object it may be easier as you are asked to tell the story of who it belongs to as well.

Length: Each critical question answer should be between 150-200 words each. The creative object biography essay should be at least 750 words and at most 1000 words.

Style: In the critical questions you should use proper citations/quotations as you are referring to someone else’s ideas. Use APA citation style and include a reference list of any materials you cite. We are trying to understand your level of comprehension of the readings and course texts as they relate to the creative project. The creative component is more open and there you can pick a style that best suits the assignment.

Research: The assignment asks you to research the origins of the object so you will have to do some research. The sources you pick should be reliable ones. As Wikipedia includes answers for everything, the veracity of the information may be an issue. Please be mindful of your sources.

Resources for Assignment: Please check Pages>Research & Writing Resources

Grading: Please review the rubric

Submission: You should submit your answers and essay in the same document.

Part I. CRITICAL QUESTIONS: Please answer the following questions about the assignment and the course readings.

(1) Which object did you pick? Why did you pick this object?

(2) Igor Kopytoff argues that in doing a biography of things one would ask questions similar to those one asks of people. What are the questions that he proposes that we ask about the commodities that we own? Also, is your object "singular" in any way?

(3) How can understanding the origins of where objects come from be a form of activism? Please discuss. Pull in information from Naomi Klein's discussion in NO LOGO as well as the work of Kopytoff and others.

(4) What have you learned about globalization by analyzing this object? How did this assignment change the way in which you think about your connections to the world?

PART II: Bibliography

Following your Critical Question section, you should include a Bibliography in APA style. Your bibliography should include reference to all the readings/materials that you used to answer your Critical Questions. Your bibliography must reference at least 4 course readings/materials.

PART III: CREATIVE COMPONENT: You should prepare a small essay in narrative format from the perspective of the object, e.g. "I am an I-phone 6. I was made in..." It should tell the biography of the object in the style of a story, a narrative. In terms of style, think about a college admission essay where you had to tell story about who you are. Now you are going to tell the story of the object you own.

As you write your biography, you should give attribution or citation to material that you used by inserting footnotes. In the footnote, just tell us where you got the information from -- a book, a website, etc. You don't have to follow a certain citation style when giving attribution through footnotes.

Your biography should include answers/discussion of the following 6 key questions:

(1) Where does the object come from? Has this object always been popular? If so how does this particular object compare to the objects of similar make up?

(2) Who made it? Tell us about them.

(3) What type of work conditions and people made this object possible (if you pick an object that requires multiple parts for assembly you should trace the origins of the essential components that make that object possible, e.g. if it is a shirt, say where the cotton for that shirt comes from; if it is sweatshirt, you should also think about the maker of the zipper, etc.

(4) Who owns this object currently and how did owner get to acquire it? (if it was purchased at a store, which store was it?)

(5) Will this object always have value or is its value a creation of contemporary culture?

(6) How is this object a product of globalization?

Make sure that the answers to these questions are a part of your narrative. As your biography answers these questions, you should demonstrate knowledge that you have learned from the class. As you rely on references and research to write your biography, please add footnotes to give attribution to the resource(s) that informed your discussion. As this is a creative writing exercise you should not just answer these questions in a typical Q and A format, but create an essay in which the answers and discussion of these six key questions emerges clearly from the biographical story you are telling.
