While some scholars see the development of the global workplace as a relatively new phenomenon born of companies' growing technical ability to move work to different sites, historians such as Jefferson Cowie and David Koistinen argue that the pattern of "deindustrialization" was established many decades ago. They point to incidences when manufacturers relocated production from the U.S. North to the U.S. South before ultimately moving production overseas.
