Creative Book Review Description & Guidelines
Overview: Imagine yourself as reviewer for a journal, newspaper or other periodical in 1848 & you have been commissioned by your editor to review Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels’ The Communist Manifesto. Using both the text & our lecture/discussion material, write a 2-3 page ‘scholarly’ review of the piece from the perspective of a contemporary (mid-19thCentury) observer.
Guidelines: When assessing your assignments I will be looking for the 5 following things…
1. Capsule Summary of the Text. Be brief here.
2. Thesis. What is Marx & Engels’ main argument? Do they present any secondary arguments?
3. Context. How does Marx & Engels’ work contribute to or alter the existing debate on this subject? In other words, why are they writing this book? Why is the text important?
4. Argument and Evidence. This will probably be the longest part of your review. Explain how the authors’ use of evidence & theory advances their argument and supports the thesis. In other words, how do the separate parts fit together? You do not have to write chapter summaries but you should be able to identify the key parts of the argument and explain how they contribute to the work’s overall thesis. Use specific examples to make your points.
5. Critique. There is no set way to critique the text, but you should consider some of the following questions….
- Do the authors’ evidence support his/her thesis?
- Is the evidence appropriate for their argument?
- Do the authors omit evidence that might contradict their argument?
-What assumptions do the authors make?
-Are these assumptions justified by the work?Â
-Is it possible to make a contrary argument using the same evidence as the authors?
-Finally, does the author fall prey to any of the many errors in logic that await the unsuspecting
 Historian/social scientist?
Most importantly, you will need to stress both the Strengths & Weaknesses of Marx & Engel’s argument.
Sources, Formatting & Due Date:
This paper requires no outside research. Your review will be completely drawn from The Communist Manifesto & our in-class discussions. If you want to draw from a creditable outside source, however, that is fine.
