In some ways, engaging transnational families is no different that engaging any family. You need to invite them to the table! However, transational families will have several internal and external barriers to engagement. As a collaborative leaders, it is important that we understand how difficult and daunting life can be for transnational families. As noted in GCU 2013, transnational families may have difficulty in understanding our educational system, policies, and expectations. Moreover, they may have difficulty understanding English, depending on their situation. It is imperative that a leader, understand the unique challenges these students face. In one of the schools I worked with we had a large group of transnational families from Senegal. We worked with several groups around the valley to provide language assistance to families so that we could communicate with them about our educational system. Some of these groups also had a mentoring component which was vital to supporting the student and families. We were also able to learn more about the unique situations of each family which was very helpful in providing targeted assistance. As collaborative leaders, we lead the charge in establishing networks with these organizations and families and act as the laison between them. Without our leadership, these families may miss out on the help they sorely need.
