The Purloined Letter," pp. 76-91, in Tales of Terror and Detection
Review Bedford's "Elements of Fiction" (http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/virtualit/fiction/elements.asp)
Select one “Element of Fiction” in either story (scroll to see list at end of this assignment).
Claim your element in your story early – post your choice on the WEEK 3: Assignment #2--Edgar Allan Poe discussion forum by.
Only one person per element per story. Title your post the appropriate Element of Fiction and your story. Example: Mood, “ Purloined Letter”--If you posted a “claim” by the deadline, no one else can do “Mood – Purloined Letter.
Everyone must write about a different element in a different story---first come, first serve. Example: No two people should be writing about the “rising action” for “Murders in Rue Morgue.” However, one person can do “rising action” for “ Murders” and one person can do “rising action” for “The Purloined Letter.” **NO DUPLICATES (or I cannot give you credit)**
Part 2
Write ONE SUBSTANTIVE PARAGRAPH describing and explaining how you see that element of the story as your element. In this paragraph, please give two brief quotations from your story to illustrate your element of fiction and then explain why you think each quotation illustrates that element of fiction. (150 - 200 words) (20 points)
Post in the same discussion forum (just edit your “claim” post when you write your actual paragraph). Example: If you select “ rising action” for “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” list the events that happen in the story that you think contribute to the tension and “rising action” that will eventually culminate with the climax. Select your two quotations; then write several sentences about WHY you think they contribute to the rising action.
Part 3
Read all your colleagues’ paragraphs on the Discussion Board
Write & Post a SUBSTANTIVE RESPONSE to one person. To get credit, you must go beyond just agreeing or disagreeing with that person. Suggestions: comment by expanding upon a detail of that element of fiction in the story you just read about. Is there something more that you see happening with the character, imagery, mood, etc. and why? (50 words minimum) (5 points)
