Getting to Know the Law – A Legal Scavenger Hunt!

Getting to Know the Law – A Legal Scavenger Hunt!

You may at some point in your life be faced with a legal issue that you do not understand or want to know more about something you heard about. Although I do not recommend in all situations that you try to handle legal issues on your own, I do believe that it is important that you understand what legal resources are available to you and ways you can help/educate yourself if an issue arises, especially if you can’t see an attorney quickly.

Good General Resources:

Google – Believe it or not, just typing in whatever topics you’re thinking about often gets you to a decent answer if you’re careful about the source. It can get dangerous in figuring out if what you find is someone’s opinion or the law on the matter, so be careful. With that said, it’s a good starting place.

Yahoo News Front Page and Finance Section

Findlaw – www.findlaw.com – This where I still look for a lot of my legal information, because it’s good and it’s free! The tab for legal professionals can be very useful in leading you statutes and cases.

Texas Resources:

Texas Attorney General - Texas AG Link

Texas Secretary of State - Texas Secretary of State Link

Texas Governor - Texas Governor Link

Texas House - TX House Link

Texas Senate – TX Senate Link

Texas Supreme Court - TX Supreme Court Link

Federal resources:

US Supreme Court - Supreme Court of the US Link

US House - US House Link

US Senate - US Senate Link

US Attorney General - US AG Link

President and Executive Branch - White House Link

Assignments

Now that you have some tools at your disposal, let’s put them to the test! You will stay at one site/location before moving on to another. All the answers I want are available on the specific sites above. Sometimes I’ll cue you in, sometimes I will not. All questions are worth 4 points, unless otherwise noted. Some answers are very brief, answer accordingly. Submit this document back to me with your answers under or next to each question via the assignments tab on Bb.

Google (shouldn’t do this much on this assignment) “Texas Statutes” and click on the first link listed – This should give you a page of clickable state codes and state laws, including the Constitution. Here is the ultimate link: http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/

Click on the Penal (AKA Criminal) Code

1.      If one is guilty of bribery in TX, what classification of crime is it and what are the possible punishments?

2.      You have a friend who is charged with theft of trade secrets. What does that mean (describe crime using statutory language) and what punishment are they facing?

Go back to the main page of codes where you started.

3.      Under what code are the rules about partnerships and limited liability companies found?

4.      What chapter of that code addresses limited partnerships?

Time to really search…go back to the first page that lists all the codes….we’ll jump around now.

5.      Under what statutory circumstances can one have the disabilities of being a minor removed?

6.      You want to make sure that your will is valid. Where would you go (Code, Chapter and Section) to determine if you did all that you needed to?

7.      Quote the TX statute that proscribes the Texas minimum wage.

8.      Under what circumstances can a “nonmanufacturing seller” be held liable for products liability under Texas law?

9.      Under the TX Statute of Frauds, which promises/agreements must be in writing to be enforceable?

Now it’s time to go look at some of our other resources.

10.  What is the purpose Uniform Commercial Code Section according to the Secretary of State’s Office in Texas?

11.  Besides UCC issues, what other big area of business law (several chapters in your text about it) does the Secretary of State also assist with?

12.  In TX, what is an attorney general’s opinion and name 3 people who may request one?

Look at the consumer protection section on the AG site (Lots of good information here)

13.  When does the 3 day right to cancel a purchase apply?

14.  What rights do you have as a tenant according to the site?

15.  What session (legislature number) is the Texas House about to enter (Spring 2017)?

16.  Who is currently the state representative to the Texas House for the TAMU-CT area (zip code 76549)?

17.  Who is the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and who appointed them?

18.  What US Supreme Court Justice looks after the 3rd circuit?

19.  What was the first day that the U.S. Supreme Court held oral arguments this fall (2016)?

20.  What do the U.S. Justices generally do on Thursday and Friday?

21.  Who are Texas’ U.S. Senators?

22.  Explore the U.S. House website a little. According to this site, what is a “representative?”

23.  According to the White House website, list four things that the President’s new approach with Cuba do?

24.  Who is the Attorney General for the United States and where did they get their law degree?

25.  What was the purpose of Senate Bill 629 signed by Governor Perry in late May of 2009?
