Directions: Answer each question below in complete sentences. Provide enough detail that indicates you understand how to evaluate and interpret the scores.

PART A: Student Growth Percentiles (SGP)

Examine the Student Growth Data Report and answer the following questions.

1.        Student A and Student E both earned failing SOL Scaled Scores.  Based on the SOL data provided, what do you know about each student’s 5th grade SOL score and their progress since grade 4?

All students are required to take the SOL test for teachers to document their progress from one grade to another. The Standards of Learning is an assessment to make sure students are learning the state’s minimum requirement of education. 400 is a passing score and a perfect score is 600.for the following assessment. Student A receive a scaled score of 449 on 5th grade SOL which is a passing score. Student growth profile according, to the chart provided was (SGP) 24 points. This showed student A received a low progress growth since 4th grade. Student A fall between a low level SGP level therefore, we will complete intervention to assist student to succeed in his/her academic.

Student E received a SOL scaled score of 298. The score showed student received a failed below basic performance on this assessment, however the student has a SGP of 26 points. This shows student has a low SGP level. Therefore, student did not show much improvement since 4th grade. Student E needs interventions to succeed in his academic.

2.        Student K and Student L earned the same SOL Scaled Score.  Based on the SOL data provided, what do you know about each student’s 5th grade SOL score and their progress since grade 4?

Student K received an SOL score of 459, which is considered a pass/proficient performance level. Student K SGP is 47 points. This shows student has a moderate SGP level. This student shows academic progress since 4th grade. We will continue giving student interventions which will help him continue his academic progress.

Student L received an SOL score of 459, which is considered a pass/proficient performance level. Student L SGP is 26 which is consider low. The chart shows student L had a passing SOL scaled score of 459. Student made little progress since 4th grade due to his SGP of 26. Student should continue interventions, to assist him in academic progress.

3.        Student B and Student V earned the same SOL Scaled Score.  Based on the SOL data provided, what do you know about each student’s 5th grade SOL score and their progress since grade 4

Student B received an SOL score of 526, which is considered a pass/advanced performance level. This student’s growth percentile is 89%, this is considered high. Student has made a vast improvement since her 4thgrade year.  Student SGP level was 85. This is considering high. We may need to challenge student reading skills at a higher-grade level, such as a middle school level.

Student V received an SOL score of 526. Student met the pass/advanced performance level. On chart provided.  I am not seeing information on student V SGP. Probably student V did not attend VA public school or completed a different assessment. Presently I cannot see any growth on student. To see growth on student we must wait at least two years.

4.        What is the purpose of the SGP from your perspective as a reading or math specialist, school counselor, or special educator?

School counselors must focus on the student academic/social and career needs. We need to learn various ways to better understand our students’ academic needs. School Counselors wants to see students’ progress and succeed in their academic. The information pertaining in the SOL gives us a better understanding on how to meet individual students learning needs.
