Merriam-webster.com defines "lede" as "the introductory section of a news story that is intended to entice the reader to read the full story."

 

This can also be referred to as a "lead-in" or a "lead." Journalists resurrected the archaic word "lede" because all professions like to have their own shop talk. Read more about that here if you'd like. I am not suggesting that you all become journalists. Rather, my point is to introduce you to a style of writing that you may be able to use in novel ways in the future.

  1. Go to the blog http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/
  2. Choose one story that interests you.
  3. Read about how to write a good lede at:  http://blog.bleacherreport.com/2011/04/14/br-101-how-to-write-a-good-lede/
  4. Wrire a lede (between 100- 200 words) to the story with a link to it.
  5. Post the lede with a link to the story on the discussion board for this chapter.
