“Mexicans are taking our Jobs”.

  1. The readings are very relevant to current debates about immigration, particularly as articulated by Donald Trump. Because he voices common ideas held by many Americans, and because the authors we are reading this week directly speak to those ideas, Trump is a perfect “straw man” for this week’s homework. So, with that in mind -- Imagine a debate between Peter Kwong and Donald Trump. Describe two main arguments that Kwong would use to respond to Trump’s call to build a "big, beautiful wall" running along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border in order to halt the flow of undocumented immigrants into the U.S.?

2. Imagine a debate between Donald Trump and Heidi Shierholz, the author of the study about how immigrant affects US labor markets. Describe two arguments that Shierholz would use to respond to Trump’s statements that “Mexicans are taking our Jobs”.
