Choose a film that gained notoriety due to the Internet and discuss how social media and other instant modes of communication have changed the ways in which we approach, appreciate, and consume films. What do these changes imply about the future of film distribution and audience participation in the film’s lifespan?
Response1:
The film I think of that came to gain notoriety due to the internet and people talking about this film is Boondock Saints. This film never had any popularity until it gained the support of film fans and people started to talk about it. The more underground or indie style film lovers found the film and that is when the film actually started to get popular. This film never really even saw a theater but once it was released on DVD, people got hold of it the film gained a ton of followers. Even so much that the second film was speculated to come out for years and finally did I believe because of the fan support. Now a third has been rumored and I feel that there will be one done but who knows when. This is all from the fan level and the fans made this film a success. Some of the facts about the film are, “After shooting, the film was shopped at the 1999 Cannes film festival in the hopes of finding a distributor - every major studio in the US turned it down, due to the Columbine Shooting one month prior. After failing to find a distributor at Cannes, the film was eventually picked up by a small company for a limited theatrical release of five theaters in the US for a period of seven days. However, it would later develop a large cult success from word of mouth following the success of DVD sales.” The film was also shot from, “10 Aug 1998 to 26 Sept 1998, it was sot in only 32 days.” The films estimated budget was 7 Million dollars, opening weekend earned an astonishing $19,930 and earned a Worldwide Box office of $411,874. After its release on DVD and its, “cult following”, the film earned $23,257,749. This is one example of people and social media making a film more popular than the anyone thought it would actually be.
