1- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated that EHEC O157 infections cause 73,000 illnesses annually in the United States, resulting in around 2000 hospitalizations. The subsequent expenditure related to tackling these cases is around $30 million being spent on medical care

2- Another major concern to human health are pathogenic bacteria, including E. coli, which are resistant to antibiotics. Several species of resistant E. coli oringinating from wild animal have been found in different continents and can potentially result in a biological calamity (Radhouani, 2014). Reinthaler (2003) has also found resistant E. coli in wastewater treatment plant effluents. Given the constant evolution and strength of these microorganisms, they will certainly subdue the drugs. In addition, the resistance of antimicrobial amongst the bacteria is increasingly becoming a public health problem (Radhouani, 2014). As a result of bacteria ability to transfer resistance genes, examination of antimicrobial resistance should be carried out at the gene level.

3- All persons presenting complications beyond common gastrointestinal symptoms, such as bloody diarrhea, should be tested for EHEC O157. Treatment with antibiotics is not recommended and can actually be harmful (Lawson, 1999). If antibiotics were to kill the bacteria, a lot more toxins would be released as the bacteria die and fall apart. Hence, only supportive care can be provided.
