The topic on junk food and obesity is a common issue in American schools. The issue needs to be addressed from different perspectives. Children spend most of their time in school and most of activities happen in schools. It is through this fact that the supporting view argues that banning junk food is effective in dealing with the issue on obesity.Even as the opposing side would argue out that it is the parents work to decide what their children eat it is a fact that schools model children’s lives by instilling them with healthy values and they do so by joining hands with parents to help build the lives of the children. Schools are a pivotal point in which a child’s life can be made better through guiding them in the most positive direction. The general well-being of a child goes beyond education and intohealth.

The American society is ready to fight the menace and this has led to widespread legislations and regulations even in the elementary schools (Trust for American’s Health, 2009).  Schools should be able to provide children with proper care and ensure their general wellbeing. The supporting side points out that through rigorous programs and curriculum schools can be able to transform the lives of their children. An instance is the Northeast Elementary school that has banned junk food in the school and instead it offers nutritious foods, holds physical education every day and also involves the parents who sign up a health contract which makes the students adapt to the healthy way of life(Metallo, 2014).

The school’s curriculum works in hand with the changing trends. It is revised regularly to ensure that it remains relevant with the current issue. For schools that ban junk food it is a more effective approach towards achieving health lifestyle to children. On the other hand with education programs such as physical education it is clear that they are meant to keep the child fit and healthy. As the opposing view argues that there are more issues that a school has to address that are of more safety concerns that monitoring what a student eats. Yes all problems need to be addressed but they need to be addressed equally and handled with the seriousness they deserve. As the institute of Medicine (2005) argues that the issue on junk food access is an important concern that needs to be addressed in correlation to the issue on obesity. It is a fact that obesity is becoming a serious issue now that needs to be addressed by schools. Obesity affects the health status of a student and which in turn affects the attendance of a child which makes it the school’s business to know the cause for this. The school acts as the instrument for helping the society with issues that affect it. It is only logic that the school should monitor what the students eat and guiding them through living a healthy lifestyle which would help in solving the problems that come with obesity and the issue itself.

Many are the health risks that students who are obese stand to suffer from such as diabetes which affects the child health wise and emotionally. A school teaches and instills good morals in a child which is main purpose of an education system. The physical exercise programs are meant to encourage students to be active physically and adapt it as part of their lifestyle. If the knowledge that is given in school is to be applied in real life then a school should be a leading example of what they teach and standing to the task of helping the society as a whole and all the issues that affect it. The opposing view argues that a school should only be able to provide the recommended curriculum and deal with more pressing issues such as bullying. Taking the instance of bullying students in school most of the cases are because of the issue on physical look which brings the issue of self-esteem. Adapting a healthy life will mean less obesity cases and no issues such as bullying. Monitoring the eating of junk food will solve the two issues at one go just like heating two birds with one stone.

A healthy life is always appreciated by everyone in the American society which is appreciating small moves towards the right direction. Organizations are promoting healthy lives an example is the American Heart Association that aims at reducing obesity in children(Metallo, 2014). As the opposing view would argue out that offering healthy food will not necessary mean that the child will eat the food because there are many avenues they can access the junk food. It is true that a child has the freedom of choice but it does not mean that we cannot introduce them to the healthy way of living and teach them to love it. Children grow up to be shaped by the society and community they are growing in. Sociologists argue that an individual behavior is more likely to be shaped by the people one associate with which is very true. If one associates with people who are living healthy he or she will be more likely to upgrade to those standards so that he or she fits in the group and school is one of those avenues.

The argument is that one can shape a tree when it is young and manipulate it to whichever direction one wants it grow. Shaping the children’s life from the very early stages of their lives is creates a greater impact. A consistent emphasis on something creates a difference, hence making the student know why banning junk food at school is important because it helps create a mutual understanding and not a rebellious one and children will be more than willing to take the course. While the opposing side would argue that monitoring what the students eat is a waste of time then it would mean that the school lucks the virtue of patience as the young minds need to mentor step by step. Even though they would not like the idea talking to them and making it look logical will make the difference.

The opposing view argues that children spend 180 days in school which means 180 lunches and breakfasts while the rest is spent at home where they can have the freedom to eat junk food. To counter the argument the school community has the greatest impact on a child than the social life spent at home. It is at school that children get important life values which shape up their lives. The school community makes up their world because all they talk even while not at school is what they have been taught especially when it is very applicable in the real life.

One acquires a lifestyle through the people one associates with the banning of junk food in schools creates a community that lives healthy and happy. The school can be able to help a child appreciate healthy living and how cool it is to be without diseases such as diabetes which can be avoided.  A child will more likely to adapt the teaching from the school because it defines them as a group which they love to be part of.  With a unique culture that exemplifies themselves from the others children will be more proud of their school. An example of such is slogans such as “we are a healthy school” (Metallo, 2014). As the supporting side puts it the school should be able to teach the little children what is good for them and their life for no one would want a bad thing to happen to their child such as a disease such as obesity which can be prevented through healthy life.

Conclusion

It is therefore a fact that junk food causes more harm to a child other than giving a child to choose what he or she wants. Banning junk food in schools is effective because it bridges the gap in the society by addressing the issue head on. Ignoring the issue and placing the task solely on the hands of the parents is being self-centered on the school’s part but being part of the change it makes it a more effective move. It is on this ground that a support that banning junk food at schools is effective.
