I believe it is very difficult for the American workplace to function in a truly democratic fashion. It may be possible for some small businesses (with only a few employees or decision makers) to successfully function in this manner but I do not believe it is possible for larger businesses, and certainly not for extremely large companies. There needs to be someone in charge, responsible for coordinating the work that is done and ensuring that tasks are completed as appropriate and in a safe manner. It is also important to note that while on the clock, employees are being paid to conduct assigned work activities and represent the company, their individual opinions or decisions should not necessarily take priority. Business operations would come to a halt if company had to handle business decisions in a democratic fashion. Company owners and leaders would not be able to make difficult business decisions to align the company with strategic goals if they had to operate in a democratic style.
Many US employees have a say through collective bargaining arrangements where the labor union has a say in employment issues. I think workers should have some say as far as being able to raise concerns, contribute ideas or refusal to perform activities that are illegal, highly immoral or dangerous; however they also need to be given direction as far as their work assignments and responsibilities.

American workers have a high level of compensation, benefits and rights in comparison to many foreign markets. This makes the cost of doing business for many employers high if they keep operations within the US. Companies can save a tremendous amount of money by taking their jobs to other countries, especially in industries like manufacturing or industrial processes.  On the flip side, off-shoring jobs can cause a lack of control of working conditions and the ability of the company to ethically manage employees in cultures that are very different from the US.
