Information technology can now be used to gather and manipulate data for unprecedented gains. With this tremendous influence comes tremendous responsibility. Both internal and external customers want to be assured that businesses are handling and caring for the personal data they collect in moral and ethical ways.

Information technology is a part of almost every business activity and, in the Western world, a part of almost every personal activity. Many of us interact with technology on a non-stop basis. This constant interaction means that people have greater access to all kinds of information that can potentially be used in unethical ways. Information technology can be used to embezzle money, steal identities, and bully others on social networks. Ethical concerns over the increased access to sensitive and personal information have led to a growing number of laws and security measures intended to protect us from potential threats. However, new legislation has not completely solved the problem.

Context

In the business world, ethical issues arise over how companies use information technology and how that usage affects customers. Recently, it was reported that some companies had been monitoring the online behavior of visitors to their online sites. The behaviors were entered into a database and sold to marketing companies without the knowledge or permission of the visitors. Is this action ethical?

Developing a code of ethics specifically for the use of information technology can help an organization protect itself and its customers, and guide the actions and behaviors of employees while they use company information technology.

To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of the business community.

  • How does an organization balance privacy with security?
  • What are some of the ethical concerns for businesses today, with regard to information technology?
