LESSON:

Six Consumer Rights

During this lecture, we will be discussing the six consumer rights.

Let’s first talk about a brief history of consumer rights and what they are.

Until approximately 1950, consumer rights did not exist. If they had an issue with a product they purchased from a business they had no one to complain to. At that point there was very little they could do if they were victims of faulty or defective products, as well as misleading or deceptive advertising practices. It was at this point that the consumerism movement began to become popular with middle-class Americans that felt consumers had a right to be treated fair by businesses they purchased products and/or services from.

It wasn’t until 1962 when President Kennedy announced creation of four very basic consumer rights which he called The Consumer Bill of Rights during a speech he gave to Congress. They were the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be heard. Then in 1985, the UN finally backed the concept of consumer rights and created an additional four consumer rights which were the right to satisfaction of basic needs, the right to redress, right to a healthy environment, and the right to consumer education. We will discuss six of the eight consumer rights below.

SIX CONSUMER RIGHTS

  • The right to be heard - Anyone involved with the manufacturing, distributing or sale of a product must listen to the consumer when they complain.
  • The right to safety – Protection of consumers against any danger or flaws in the products or service they purchase.
  • The right to be informed - Consumers must be given any information they request about a product or service they purchase.
  • The right to choose - Consumers should be given a variety of product and services options to choose from which encourages competition and prevents monopolies.
  • The right to a healthy environment – Consumers have the right to live and work in a healthy environment.
  • The right to satisfaction of basic needs – Consumers have the right to essential goods and services such as healthcare, education and public utilities.
