Effective use of the Internet depends upon the possession of strategic information-gathering skills. The researching student defines a set of initial questions, visits appropriate sites, collects promising material, signs off, reviews their information and then plans yet another visit.
The question is whether or not all this activity signifies meaning. Does "surfing" the Web lead to insight, truth and value, or is the Internet experience more like a hunt for random facts? Does the typical user skim along the surface collecting souvenirs and entertaining pictures, or does the Internet serve a deeper and more valuable purpose?
Using the Internet is the easy part. Collecting and saving hundreds of pages of information is also easy. The important, and often ignored, issue is the importance of seeking relevant information.
Create a thread. Then:
1] Place the following research steps in the correct order of importance, starting from what you think the first step should be. They are in alphabetical order now—they should not be. evaluating, gathering, planning, sorting, synthesizing, questioning
2] After putting the words in the correct order, discuss (in one sentence) how each word will help you organize and write your research paper.
