I have a friend who worked for General Motors in Detroit, but who now lives in Canada. She receives a monthly pension benefit from GM. The mail is sometimes delayed, and when she gets the check, it is difficult for her to get to the bank. I suggested that she sign up for direct deposit. She tells me that it is impossible to have her GM pension check deposited into a Canadian bank account. I find that hard to believe. Is she right? She gets her US Social Security through direct deposit into a Canadian bank account. What makes me suspicious is that, until recently, she had a rotary dial phone. She refused to get a push button phone, because she thought they would have to re-wire the entire house and drill holes in the wall. Finally, her doctor insisted that she have a push button phone, so she could access certain emergency services if needed. The telephone guy came out to the house, and within five minutes, he had the push button phones installed and working properly, without any drilling or re-wiring.
