My brother quit his job & moved back home to assist our Mother in caring for our Stepfather after he suffered a stroke (he's a big man and our Mom can't handle him by herself). Because of this, my brother has no outside income whatsoever and lives off the retirement income of our parents (approximately $70,000 annually). Recently, after some years in pain he had his teeth removed and replaced with dentures - the cost was nearly $5,000 (I haven't the exact number) and completely drained his remaining life savings. Considering he has no income ($0.00), can he claim the $5,000 on his income taxes? If so, how much can he hope to see returned? Thanks for your help.
