Canadian currency

I have 50 Canadian dollars that I would like to convert to US dollars. Can someone tell me if stores in the US will accept Canadian money for purchases. I'm told that US banks and stores will not accept Canadian currency or coins although I sometimes have to take Canadian coins as change for my US dollars. How dare merchants deny my Canadian money but expect me to accept their coins as change. Please advise.
