I noticed that my local supermarket was charging GST on eggs. I believed that was a mistake. I informed them and was told that the manager would take care of it. My question is, what happens to the money that was collected by the supermarket in error. Do they keep it? Do they have to submit it to the Tax Office? Do they give it to charity? The supermarket had just changed hands about two weeks ago but I imagine the amount erroneously collected could be a few thousand. If they are required to donate that money to a charity, I feel they should, for transparency sake, be required to advise their customers of that fact, probably via a sign near the product. Thanks. Oh, and they didn't offer to refund me the GST I had paid on the eggs either :(
