I recently started fostering dogs for a local rescue shelter. I signed a contract with the rescue to be one of their foster parents but I earn no money from them nor do I accept free dog food from them. To care for these foster dogs, I ended up purchasing 5 quality pet gates to keep the dogs in designated parts of the house until they were house-trained or I could trust them in the main part of my home. One of the gates, a 6-panel gate which is set up to create a run through the dining room to the back door, cost $400. Since I got these gates solely to care for the foster dogs (my own dog doesn't need them), can I declare them on my taxes?
