holiday visa

I worked there on a working holiday visa but had to return early due to family reasons. I earnt over $1000 in tax and thought i would be able to claim this back but when i got in touch with the office they informed me that i owed them $2500 due to not working for longer than 6 months (i worked for just over 5 months). I was not aware of the 6 month rule otherwise i would have made other arrangemtents to stay the extra 3 weeks. Does anyone know a way around this? I am still a student and was there on an industrial working placement? Thanks
