5 Questions.

Instructions— Your response should be approximately the word total suggested for each of the five questions. These guidelines are approximate; just be sure that the total is something like 500 words. The text must be double spaced.

Questions—(answer all questions as a good Kantian would):

1. Why did Kant think it important that principles of morality be established a priori? (approximately 100 words)

2. A maxim is a subjective principle for acting, but does it ever “adopt” certain aspects of being objective? If your answer is no, why doesn’t it? If your answer is yes, describe how it does. (approx. 100 wds)

3.  Why did Kant believe that people ought to follow “the law”? In other words, what is it that makes people (or should make them) subject to the law? (approx. 100 wds)

4.  Briefly explain the argument against autonomy, then state whether or not you agree with it: whichever side you take, give reasons why. (approx.. 100 wds)

5. Here is a thought experiment you are to analyze and state what it is you should do, and why:

A friend and I are stranded on a desert island, thinking we are about to die. My friend is a very rich man, and an ardent sports fan. He gives me power of attorney over his fortune, and he asks and I agree to see to it that the money is given to the Washington Redskin football team, to pay for next season’s draft picks (players the Skins are recruiting), to make the team better. My friend dies, but I am rescued. Once back in Washington, I decide that it would serve a higher purpose to give the fortune to a children’s hospital, which could surely save many lives with the money. Would it be moral or immoral for me to give the money to the hospital? Why? (100 wds.)
