Practice and Knowledge Management

You are to research "Communities of Practice and Knowledge Management" and with the data or information you gather develop an understanding of the topic(s).

FORM, LENGTH, SOURCES

The paper should be written at an appropriate level (graduate) for this course. Your paper should be:

  • At least 3 pages in length (not including references, title page, index, etc.),
  • Double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12 point font.
  • You must use credible sources.
  • This paper must use an approved research and documentation style, such as MLA, APA or Chicago Style with footnotes, bibliography, title page, executive summary, table of contents.
  • It may contain appendices if you choose.
  • This paper should include a section that requires your own analysis or conclusions in the final section and demonstrates your ability to critically assess the resources you’ve selected and the topic that you’ve presented.
  • If you cite Internet sources, please verify that they are active so I may review them. If they are no longer available, feel free to attach the electronic version for my review. If your citations include lengthy works, such as published texts, your work could be supported with 8 or more sources. If you only use Web sites, you probably need 16 or more (if they are only one or two pages) to present the topic completely as well as differing views regarding the conclusions or applications.

Write the paper using the third person. Do not use first or second person pronouns in your narrative. Note: This requirement is negotiable. If you are writing this paper as something you are planning on turning in to your boss/supervisor let me know and we can make changes to this area.

For those of you who may have little or no experience with papers requiring documentation, feel free to examine how the authors include a list of sources in their text as well as footnotes and the style of their text. You are also encouraged to visit your local library and request assistance or resources.

There must be at least one citation from each source listed in the bibliography. Quality sources may be cited more than once. Therefore, the number of citations will be in relation to the sources used. You must include the course textbook (Laudon, K. C., & Laudon J. P. Management information systems: Managing the Digital Firm,13th Edition) and the style manual you use as references. I would expect a minimum of 8 references in a paper of this length two of which must be the course textbook and a reference to the 'style' manual you use. As noted earlier if you use web only sources then a minimum of 12 - 16 references would be appropriate.

PAPER FORMAT

  • Title Page (See Core Writing Requirements for a sample)

(Title of paper, your name and date, course name and number, semester and year.)

  • Abstract (The summary of one page or less, single-spaced of your paper.)
  • Statement of the topic and relevance or importance
  • Key issues of this topic
  • Application of the course material/concepts to your topic
(Be sure to make use of the lecture notes and discussion notes and the text.)
  • Research on the topic from other sources, including the text
(This is the largest section of the paper that includes source citations.)
  • Your conclusion(s)

(What you’ve learned from this paper and the course in light of the key issues posted in week one along with any of your learning objectives.)

Where you state, provide your opinions they must be listed as such.

  • Opinion: May be included but as a separate area.
