open-source software issue

Though the source of the statement is anonymous, it has been said that ‘there are two reasons why the free and open-source software issue has become such an inspirational and powerful force today: the rise of the Internet and the growing tendency to protect all intellectual property’ (Wynants & Cornelis, 2005). As noted in your Lecture Notes, PHP is an open-source language. Like other open-source products, it is freely available to anyone and may be redistributed. Technically, as open-source, it is also modifiable, but the controlling PHP group restricts changes via a clause in its licence stating, ‘The name “PHP” must not be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without prior written permission’ (The PHP Group, 2013).

With the continual rise in popularity of PHP as a solution to e-commerce applications and the tendency to protect intellectual property, just how open do you think the future will be as far as Web application development is concerned? For this Discussion, reflect on all of these statements and take a position on the future of Web application development via open-source tools and languages.

To complete this Discussion:

Post: Create an initial post in which you take a position on the future of Web application development via open-source tools and languages. To do so, compare open-source tools and languages and analyse how they are used and how that usage is limited. Explain how you think the desire to protect all intellectual properties influences these uses and limitations. Utilise all of this information to speculate about and support the future of open Web application development. Provide links to the open-source tools and languages you review.
