Personality essay
My story is pretty interesting since I am surrounded by a loving family and caring friends. My sweet and easy going grandfather whom we live with says that am beautiful and aggressive. My dad describes me as assertive, an achiever and loving this might be true from the way he calls my name and looks into my eyes when am wrong. As for my mom, she feels that am affectionate, kind, sweet and a leader though I nag a lot and overdo my makeup. Before we get to my siblings, I must admit that we fight a lot and I got bruises to show for it. Well, most people call this competing for attention which I seek a lot. My brother feels that I spend most time in my room, that am a perfectionist, neat and hard headed. My small sister feels that am warm, kind and accommodate yet mean and overly strict with my personal belongings. This descriptions may represent my outward self through my interaction with others but they do not accurately describe my true self. I have done far crazy things that my family cannot comprehend therefore, I can affirm that only I understands my true identity. I was born in China and brought up strictly in a financially stable and religious family.
My father is a great man who owns and manages a reputable firm while my mother works as a teacher. Both of my parents are very busy and spend most of their time away from home. Growing up in large city, my life has always revolved around the busy streets of Hong Kong and living abroad. I first moved abroad while I was 15 years old to attend High school in Virginia. Currently, I am a university student in the University of Washington. I have always been consistent in my studies performing exceptionally well. My mother has had direct impact on my studies, she always ensured that I had all my assignments done before I would go to bed and that I had to written legibly in good handwriting. However, I know within myself that if I attain high academic qualifications my professional life will be exemplary and progressive. Life abroad at first was not so easy, I must confess I felt lost and confused for some time. I had to adapt to a different culture and learn to speak in proper English to communicate efficiently. In some circumstances, I have realized that experience or attract special interest due to my race. This at times is disturbing but I have learned to cope. Overtime, I made worthy friends who are nice and live near my place such that we spend a lot of time together. Severally, my friends and I have hit the road crossing into several States. In addition, I push myself to be assertive among my peers, never letting my sexual orientation or gender limit my opportunities. I don’t feel threatened by male counterparts since I have the courage to stand up for myself and argue my way out of a difficult situation. Somehow, I feel that this puts off many male friends who feel threatened by my being an opinioned lady. Since, I was a small child I have harbored great interest in religion such that to this day, I do attend mass often. I must confess that many are the times that my mind races off when the priest is into the third sentence of the sermon. Who wouldn’t anyway with an amazing golden altar, stained glass windows and Gothic and Romanesque designs within the interiors of the Cathedral available for the eyes to be-hold. I must admit that I love to shop a lot, though I follow a pragmatic saving culture I always find myself spending more on nice shoes, clothes, make-up and other accessories. I love horse riding especially on a calm day and make a point of attending racecourse events frequently. Reflecting on the course work, it is now clearly evident how my life has been influenced by others socially. When I moved into Virginia as a teenager, I found myself facing repeat stereotyping acts such as some students doing the squinted eyes joke. This evidently represents the social categorization concept which implies placing people into social groupings depending on their distinct features (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). My recent bonding with friends from campus has given me a sense of belonging evident in the social identification concept. According to Mcleod (2008), this concept represents the second stage where the individual conforms to the group norms to easily bond. Tajfel and Turner (1979) point out that at this point, one receives emotional support. Lastly, being a university student, I am able to identify with my fellow students regardless my race or skin color, I have the comfort and security to call them peers which is identified as social comparison.
In conclusion, I cherish the diversity within the society as this gives me a sense of belonging and influences my immediate environment. I deeply appreciate the numerous ways in which the society offers a platform for me to define my true self as well as grow my confidence. While, I deserve all the accolades my friends and family pour upon me, I strongly believe that I hold the true definition to who I am. This distinguishes me from any other person making me to appreciate who I am. Most importantly, I realize that I have the ability to prevail and influence myself to achieve and change myself for better.Â
