global technology issue

Video Blog 2-1: Relationship between Technology and Society Overview

The final project for this course involves a multimedia presentation in which you will devise a plan of action for addressing a local or global technology issue of your choice. To prepare you for the experience, you will be asked to complete a series of shorter “video blogs” every other week (for a total of three). These are intended to be more informal, but they are still important to your overall success because they allow you to practice both your analysis skills and your oral presentation skills.

Prompt

For this first video blog, select a technology and analyse how it is a product of social construction as well as having a decided influence on social relations. You may use the same technology you select for your final project or a completely different one. Support your position with evidence from the readings that you completed over the past two weeks. The video blog should be 4 to 6 minutes in length. Be sure to address the following in your analysis:

  1. Describe how the technology is socially constructed.
    1. Identify the technology that you selected and how human actions help shape the technology. Where did the technology come from?
    2. Describe the meaning ascribed to the technology by one or more social groups.
  2. Describe how the technology affects social relationships.
    1. Identify how the technology is shaping the way people behave.
    2. Describe at least one conflict between humans and the technology you selected.
    3. Describe the implications of the conflict on peoples’ relationships with one another. How might it affect social relationships and human behaviour?
