physical principle involved in the physical activity

Course: PHYS202 Section: _______________________________ Name: _________________________ Instructor Name: _______________________ __________________________________________________________________________
Title: *3 to 5 words descriptive of the laboratory activity. Delete all text and instructions in
red italics between the asterisks.*
__________________________________________________________________________
Abstract: *An abstract is a single paragraph that summarizes the key points of the manuscript
in 5 to 8 sentences. The abstract should be written in italics. Do not use equations or bullet
points. Because this section is a summary, wait until all other sections have been written before
writing this section. If you are having trouble writing the abstract you could try this strategy:
write two sentences summarizing each of the main sections of the report. This will result in an
abstract of about the correct length. Insert a page break after this section. Delete all text and
instructions in red italics between the asterisks.*
__________________________________________________________________________
Introduction: *Write an introduction of at least one page in length. Showcase your
understanding of the physical principle involved in the physical activity. The introduction should
follow a “general to specific” pattern:
● In the first sentence(s), use plain English to define the physical principle with which we will be
working.
● Provide the background necessary for your reader to understand the principle. Feel free to use
examples from the earlier lab activities to illustrate the concepts you are describing.
● Focus in on the experimental setup. Develop all appropriate equations. A good rule of thumb is
that if an equation is to appear in the results section, you should develop that equation here.
Be sure to cite your source(s) in APA format. Delete all text and instructions in red italics
between the asterisks.*
__________________________________________________________________________
Methods: *Describe in your own words the experimental procedure used to complete the
activity. This section in often very short, but should include information and non-obvious tips
that would have been helpful in the instructions.
● Do not copy and paste, or simply repeat the directions given in the course materials.
● Do given details on anything you had to do, create, or figure out either on your own or with the
help of classmates. For instance, you will be directed to control certain variables and read out others. Describe
how each is accomplished in this section. Delete all text and instructions in red italics between
the asterisks.*
__________________________________________________________________________
Results: *Continue the story you started in the introduction. This section should begin with a
paragraph containing the experimental objective you were directed to test in the laboratory
instructions. An experimental objective could be a hypothesis you were asked to formulate, or
simply a statement of the expected value (e.g. the acceleration due to gravity) of a parameter you
were directed to measure. Provide information on data analysis. This is a good place to discuss
any calculations you needed to make and to show examples of these calculations. Present your
results in both plain English and through the use of supporting plots and graphs. Be sure to
discuss any uncertainties associated with your measurements. Delete all text and instructions in
red italics between the asterisks.*
__________________________________________________________________________
Discussion: *Specifically address the results of the laboratory activity. Discuss how the results
did or did not support the hypothesis, or match the expected value of the parameter. Don’t
repeat anything from your results section, but do elaborate on those results. Consider the
limitations of the experimental result and its applicability. Ask what further questions have
occurred to you during the laboratory that could be pursued in the future. Delete all text and
instructions in red italics between the asterisks.*
__________________________________________________________________________
Conclusion: *This section should be brief, at most one or two paragraphs, and serve to wrap
up the laboratory report. Strive to connect the discussion with the information contained in the
introduction. Delete all text and instructions in red italics between the asterisks.*
__________________________________________________________________________
References: *Excelsior College has adopted the American Psychological Association (APA)
style guidelines for English usage as its standard. Refer to the provided Intro APA Tip Sheet from
Excelsior Library for proper citation formatting. Delete all text and instructions in red italics
between the asterisks.* Flow: While not an actual section of the laboratory, keep in mind that you are telling a story.
The plain English narrative is just as important as all of the data tables and plots to your dual
objectives of 1) communicating your point, and 2) demonstrating your understanding of the
material. While the results section contains the words, “Continue the story you started in the
introduction” these word are equally applicable to all sections of the report. Delete all text and
instructions in red italics between the asterisks, including the word “Flow”. *
