1) Describe the Depression of the 1930s. How was the election of 1932 a realigning election? What was the New Deal and what were some of its programs? How did it address unemployment, housing, banking?

2) Describe the rise of black consciousness and related Civil Rights movement from 1920 to 1968. Who were some of the key players? How did they differ? What were some of the key events? Where was there success and where was there failure?  (MLK, Black Panthers, Core, Nation of Islam, Harlem Renaissance)

3) Trace the history of the Cold War from 1945 to 1991. What were the key assumptions of US policy makers (eg Domino theory)?  How was Europe and Soviet Style Communism different from the Third world? (eg Angola, Cuba, Vietnam, Nicaragua…nationalism v Soviet or Chinese expansion).   In what Countries did the Soviet Union and the US intervene? What were some of the key events?

4) Discuss social change between 1930-1985.  What economic conditions gave rise to these changes?  It what ways were the fifties a response to WWII and the depression?  In what ways were the sixties and seventies a “corrective” to the fifties?  It what ways were the eighties a “corrective” to the sixties and seventies?  (Here you want to talk about suburbia, the attitudes to towards civil rights, women and economic policy especially)

 

5) What changes did WWII bring about at home and abroad?  What was the effect of the war economically?  What was the Marshall Plan and what was its effect at home and abroad?  In what ways were US/Soviet relations affected between 1944 and 1950.  What were the key developments?
