I need help completing my mid-range theory paper for my nursing theory class. I already started the paper and turned in a first draft to the instructor. He provided feedback for my specific paper as well as general guidelines for the entire class after reading the drafts.
I will like to keep as much of the original contents as possible. I mainly need help completing the following sections of the paper that I didn't complete when I turned in the draft;
- Recommendations for Use in Practice
- Recommendations for Use in Research
- Conclusion.
Then I want you to edit the paper to meet the teacher's general guidelines provided in APA format. Please see the attachments for copies of my draft with the instructors feedback and guidelines. I have also included the rubric.
This is the main book used for the paper.
Peterson, S. J., & Bredow, T. S. (2013). Middle range theories: Application to nursing research. (3rd Ed.). Philadelphia: Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. ISBN/ISSN: 978-1-60831-800-1
General Comments and Guidelines.docx
Draft with intructor's feedback.docx
Class,
Here are some general comments regarding your draft papers. These are in no particular order, I just wrote them down as I read through your papers. I apologize if you recognize a component of your writing, but I used examples from both sections of the course to illustrate common issues with student papers. These examples are meant to point out common incorrect practices so everyone has the opportunity to submit an excellent paper.
I did not correct every issue, nor did I comment on every inconsistency. Rather I gave general ideas on how to improve your papers. Please make sure you are reviewing the rubric and capturing all the components. Most of you did not do this and are missing a great deal of content.
1. All papers need to be submitted in APA format. Please make sure you are formatting correctly. This includes an abstract (250 words only with headers) running headers, page numbers, headings and references.
2. The total page limit is your written work. This does not include the title page, abstract (this should be written on page 2, the references or any figures of the theory model you might want to add.
3. Paragraph structure is as follows:
a. Opening statement (strive for only have one idea per paragraph).
b. Statements that support or refute your opening statement.
c. Concluding statement that leads to the next idea.
4. Please review the rubric and make sure you are capturing all the requirements. (I know I have said this a couple of times but this is really important – most of you did not do this.)
5. In the theory evaluation section, please identify, in a paragraph, the theory critique process you will be using, don’t just evaluate the theory.
6. Secondary references – these should only be used sparingly. If you are citing from the book, check the reference list, as the primary reference should be there. Look up the article, briefly read it to make sure the book authors captured the essence of the article and then use the primary source.
7. Generally speaking, paragraphs are too long. Any paragraph over 6 sentences probably should be two or more paragraphs.
8. Avoid direct quotes – graduate students engaged in scientific writing should not use direct quotes. Paraphrase and cite to avoid direct quotes.
9. Avoid flowery language. “Just the facts” is what I hear the voice in my head saying as I am writing.
10. When in doubt – cite it.
a. Generally speaking you should cite everything that is not a universal fact – The sky is blue – is a universal fact.
b. Avoid absolute words such as all, every, never, etc.
11. Remember, sentences should be able to stand alone. That means do not use phrases such as:
a. “This theory is mainly… Rather, state the theory.
b. “The former option is…: Rather, state the option.
c. “One study by…” is unnecessary. There is no need to use this phrase.
d. “In an article by…” is unnecessary and slows the reader down.
e. “As mentioned previously…” The reader cannot read your mind so state what you are talking about and do not use this phrase.
12. Do not anthropomorphize – meaning giving human characteristics to non-human objects.
a. “While research continues to develop an understanding...” is incorrect, as research cannot do this. However, researchers can.
13. Everyone should review page 41 of your APA manual. There are examples of proper formatting for the different pages.
14. The acceptable fonts for APA are Times New Roman 12 or Arial 11. Please use one of these two fonts.
15. Margins are to be 1 inch all around.
16. If you are using your academic credentials, they should be your degree, license, certifications, then fellowships (PhD, MS, RN, CEN, FAEN) for example. I use the MS because it is not in nursing, otherwise you would only put the highest degree in your field.
17. Abstracts should be structured and have headings. For instance
Introduction: An introductory statement or two the piques the readers’ interest.
Purpose: A statement stating something to the effect of: To critique the HRQOL theory.
Methods: A brief description of the theory critique method you used.
Results: A brief statement of how the theory meets the theory critique standards.
Implications for Practice: How you can use the theory in practice
Conclusion: Summary of the paper.
All this in 250 words. I like to write everything out first, then do a word count, then edit the abstract down to the 250 words.
18. Headings – please refer to page 62 in your APA manual. Here is how I would structure the theory critique section
Theory Critique
I would write a paragraph on the theory critique I am using for this paper.
Internal Criticism
I would define what Internal Criticism is.
Adequacy. I would define what adequacy means in theory critique and then talk about how the theory
meets or does not meet these criteria.
Clarity : etc.
External Criticism
I would define what External Criticism is.
Reality Convergence. etc.
