platoon of soldiers

1.    A platoon of soldiers (all of different heights) is in rectangular formation on a parade ground. The sergeant  rearranges the soldiers in each row  of the  rectangle in decreasing order of height. He then rearranges the soldiers in each column in decreasing order of height. Using the Pigeonhole Principle, prove that it is not necessary to rearrange the rows again; that is, the rows are still in decreasing order of height.
