Native Americans and Asian American often have cultural beliefs and practices
that are different from European Americans. As such, it is critical for counselors
to learn as much as possible about these cultures and to develop degree skills to
work effectively with individuals from these cultures. According to the ACA Code
of Ethics, multicultural competence is defined as a capacity whereby counselors
possess cultural and diversity awareness and knowledge about self and others,
and how this awareness and knowledge is applied effectively in practice with
clients and client groups.
