Displacement Method

The rigid beam AD in Fig. P3.5-11 is supported by a smooth pin at D and by vertical steel rods attached to the beam at points A and C. Neglect the weight of the beam, and assume that the support rods are stress-free when P = 0. (a) Use the Displacement Method to solve for the rotation, θ, of the beam AD when load P is applied. (b) Determine the axial stresses in support rods (1) and (2) when load P is applied.
