Padgett and Spurrier

Padgett and Spurrier (1990) analyze the breaking strengths of carbon fibers used in fibrous composite materials. These fibers measure 50 mm in length and 7-8 microns in diameter. Periodically, the manufacturer selects random samples of five fibers and tests their breaking stresses. Specifications require that 99% of the fibers must have a breaking stress of at least 1.2 CPa (gigapascals). Table 5.3 lists the breaking stresses (in GPa) from 20 such subgroups. Use all 20 subgroups as a base period.

a. Calculate the appropriate control limits for an R-chart and plot the data. Comment on your results.

b. Calculate the appropriate control limits for an X-chart based on 12 and plot the data. Comment on your results.

c. What did you assume to construct these control limits? Given the information in the base period, how comfortable are you with these assumptions?
