nondominant hand

Refer to the output for Exercise 11.52 about letters printed with the nondominant hand.

a. Find the value of sp = pooled standard deviation for these data.

b. For the pooled two-sample procedure, find the (pooled) standard error of the difference in sample means.

c. What would be the degrees of freedom for the pooled procedure?

Exercise 11.52

Each of 63 students in a statistics class used her or his nondominant hand to print as many letters of the alphabet, in order, as they could in 15 seconds. The following output for this exercise gives results for a 95% confidence interval for the difference in population means for females and males. The “unpooled” procedure was used (Data source: letters dataset on the companion website).

a. What was the mean number of letters printed by females in the sample? What was the mean number printed by males? What is the difference between the sample means for males and females? (Use females - males.)

b. What is the 95% confidence interval given in the output for the difference between population means? Write a sentence that interprets this interval.

c. Refer to part (b). On the basis of the 95% confidence interval, what conclusion can be made about whether the population means for males and females differ? Explain.

d. Find the value of the (unpooled) standard error of the difference between sample means.

e. Note that the value for degrees of freedom for this problem are given at the end of the output as “DF = 60.” Use Table A.2 to find the value of t* that was used in finding the interval.
