A sewage sludge incinerator has a scrubber for removing the particulate material from its emissions, but the scrubber has been acting up, and a small pilot bag filter is being tested for applicability for treating the particulate emissions. The experimental setup is to split the emissions from the incinerator so that the 200 m3/s total flow is split with 97% going to the scrubber and only 3% going to the pilot bag filter. The particulate concentration of the untreated emission is 125 mg/m3. The solids collected at the baghouse are collected hourly and averaged out to 2.6 kg/hr. The water does not have any particulates in it when it enters the scrubber at a flow rate of 2000 L/min. There is negligible evaporation in the scrubber, and the scrubber water is found to carry solids at a rate of 52 kg/hr.
a. What is the efficiency of each method of air pollution control?
b. Regardless of the outcome in the effi- ciency calculations, is there any reason why the scrubber would still be superior as a pollution control device?
