The application of private IP address spaces and Network Address

The mechanisms implemented by higher layer protocols for reliable delivery, and the policies which determine how they are used, can have a significant impact on congestion in a network.

i. Identify two such mechanisms/policies, other than timers, and briefly explain how they influence congestion.

ii. Draw two figures illustrating the exchange of packets over time that demonstrates how timers used by higher layer protocols for reliable delivery can influence congestion. One figure should demonstrate behaviour when timers are set correctly, the second figure when timers are set incorrectly. Note: You aren't illustrating congestion, only how the use of timers affects the behaviour of higher layer protocols, which could/would influence congestion.

 

The application of private IP address spaces and Network Address Translation (NAT) have reduced the pressure on the IPv4 address space, allowing entire networks to be connected to the Internet using only a single public IP address. A key disadvantage of this approach however, is that the IP addresses cannot be used to identify a single host on the private network. Identify and briefly explain two problems caused by this approach.
