Report: a settling tank in a water treatment plant has an inflow of 2,000 lpm (liters per minute). The solid concentration in the inflow is reported by their laboratory manager as being 2.1 g/liter. The effluent from the settling tanks is pumped to or it is let to go by gravity into sand filters (usually, the latter is better than the former). The concentration of the sludge (the underflow from the settling tank) is 1.8 g/L. The flow into the filters is 1.8 liters per minute.

(a) what is the underflow rate in the settling tank?

b)estimate the surface area of the sand filters to be used with the settling tank of the given performance and characteristics as described above

c) estimate the solid concentrations in the effluent
