what is the difference between a WAN and a LAN?

What do you think is a WAN, and from the reading what is the difference between a WAN and a LAN? As we know it, WANs deals with distance, with that said you would imagine that you would have to lease the lines (cables) by going through your ISP. On the other hand, anyone can build a LAN by purchasing the equipment like a switch, cables (Cat 5/ 6), router, and end devices that means that you can own a LAN. As for WANs the infrastructure is the same but different. The economics and the logistics in creating a WAN are extremely expensive so that is why you go through an ISP and lease their services. According to Wendell Odom, "WANs physically pass through other people's property, and you do not have the right to put your cables and devices there"(Odom, 2016). As we see that you own a LAN but you lease a WAN. What other things can you think of that drives this vehicle (WAN)?
