JDK Map class to write more efficient code when constructing

I need help making sure that I have all the requirements for project 2. The attached file gets a liitle confusing as to what I am needed for this project so here is what needs to be done.

Project 2 General Objectives

 Project 2 - Map class, Comparator, sorting

  1. Use the JDK Map class to write more efficient code when constructing the internal data structures from the data file.
  2. Implement SORTING using the Comparator interface together with the JDK support for sorting data structures, thus sorting on different fields of the classes from Project 1.
  3. Extend the GUI from Project 1 to let the user sort the data at run-time.

I have had help with project 1, but the tutor did way more then needed. I believe that i am missing Comparator. attached is project 2 instructions as well as what i have so far.
import java.util.Scanner;

public class Thing {

    String name;
    int index;
    int parent;

    public Thing(Scanner sc)
    {

        if(sc!=null)
        {
            name=sc.next();
            index=sc.nextInt();
            parent=sc.nextInt();
        }
    }

    public int getIndex() {
        return index;
    }

    public String getName() {
        return name;
    }

    public int getParent() {
        return parent;
    }

    @Override
    public String toString()
    {
        return name+" "+index;
    }
}
