The rigid beam AD in Fig. P3.5-16 is supported by three identical vertical rods that are attached to the beam at points A, C, and D. When the rods are initially attached to the beam and P = 0, the rods are stress-free. (a) Use the Displacement Method to solve for the vertical displacements uA and uD of points A and D when the load P is applied to the beam at point B. (b) Calculate the axial stress in each of the three support rods when the load is applied.
