understand why getting the following error when executing

Could someone please help me understand why I am getting the following error when executing my pl/sql program?

 

Error report -

ORA-00979: not a GROUP BY expression

ORA-06512: at line 18

ORA-06512: at line 54

00979. 00000 - "not a GROUP BY expression"

But when I run the SQL statement without running the program it returns the result set needed:

 

SELECT TRIM(TO_CHAR(hire_date, 'Day')), COUNT(employee_id) AS emp_count

 FROM employee

 GROUP BY TRIM(TO_CHAR(hire_date,'Day'))

 HAVING COUNT(*) = (SELECT MAX(COUNT(*)) FROM employee GROUP BY TRIM(TO_CHAR(hire_date,'Day')));

 

The question is :Find all employees who were hired on the days of the week on which the highest number of employees were hired.

 

This is a portion of a question from midterm for the course. Need answer as soon as possible please.
