hide items from an unordered list using JQuery

How would  I show and hide items from an unordered list using JQuery? I've used the code I have now, but it never displays what I wrote for hide. I've also looked online, but the examples are with buttons. There are no errors in the code. It just doesn't show up. For example, three names need to be made visible. Then, once a name is clicked, it would show other information.
